"Christmas in Our Hearts" by Jose Mari Chan was originally an arrangement entitled "Ang Tubig ay Buhay" (Water is Life), based on a poem written by Chari Cruz-Zarate. The song "Christmas in Our Hearts" was released in November 1990 by Universal Records under the album of the same title. The album sold over 600,000 units in 2006 and became the first to achieve and surpass Double Diamond status in the Philippines.

Jose Mari Chan set the words to music, intending to make it a silver jubilee song for the Assumption High School Class of 1963. He described "Ang Tubig ay Buhay" as a very beautiful poem, which is why he found it easy to compose a tune for it.

It was a catchy, pretty melody, which Chan felt was too precious to use only for a Class Homecoming. So Chan decided to turn it into a Christmas song.

That was the time when “Christmas In Our Hearts” was born. As to how Chan and his daughter, Liz, ended up recording the song was a different story.

"I presented it. I said it sounds like a nice duet. At that time, Lea Salonga was very popular because of Miss Saigon. I called her up, I let her hear the melody and she liked it. She said okay except that her recording company, they would not allow her to record with me," he said.

Aside from Salonga, Chan also gave theater actress Monique Wilson a call but she ended up not doing the song with him because she lost her voice the day before they were supposed to record it.

Chan doesn't recall who suggested her daughter to be his duet partner. But he went to her room and said, "Liz, what are you doing? Can you learn this song? She was 19." "We recorded it the next day. It was really meant to be a father-daughter song. It's a perfect combination for Christmas," he said.
