Roman Wrist Guards, Cuffs or Bands for the Roman Soldier Uniform
For me, nothing beats the "warrior look" other than with a pair of mean-looking wrist bands or wrist guards. Sometimes they're also called wrist cuffs. I've made these before for a Mercury or Hermes (the god of speed) costume.

Roman Apron Belt, Battle Skirt or Groin Guard
One of the accessories truly distinctive of a Roman soldier's military uniform is the Roman apron belt. It is sometimes called the leather war or battle skirt and forms part of the belt (Cingulum militare). The apron essentially protects the lower part of the soldier's body particularly the groin. Hence it is also referred to as the groin guard.

Tunic and Cloak Attachment in the Roman Soldier Uniform
For Roman Soldier uniform costume, I didn't want to permanently attach the cape or cloak to the tunic shirt. I wanted an option for my son to put it on or remove the cloak from the tunic shirt as needed.

With barely a week to prepare for my son's monologue speech from the "Florante at Laura" poem, I'm happy that we were able to produce a convincing (at least to us and his classmates) Roman soldier uniform - given the limited time.
So let's dissect the parts and accessories that made up the Roman General/Soldier Uniform costume that we put up together.

Costume Ideas for Roman General or Soldier Uniform
It's that time of the year again in school when students are gearing up for speech contests. In the recent past, speech choirs have been the trend. It seems that this year, individual speeches are on the comeback.
Personally, I'd rather have students give individual speeches rather than perform in speech choirs. Speech choirs require them to meet together at an agreed place and practice a set choreography for the group. Individual speeches give the students the freedom to be more creative on their own. And individual speeches may be practiced conveniently at home.

Father's Day Celebration and More
This was really long overdue. And no, it isn't just Father's Day celebration.
I've promised the kids pizza many weeks ago to celebrate their academic successes. But with the enrollment to new schools this year and having Karen settled, we were simply too busy.

UP Los Banos Boarding House Sendoff
With Karen's enrollment all completed, it was time to settle her in her boarding house. Yes, this will be her home away from home for the next few months, although technically, she'd still be coming home every weekend.
This is the boarding house where Karen will be staying.

Enrollment at UP Diliman 2010

We left at around 8 am to hopefully finish the last leg of Che's enrollment in UP Diliman. Little did we expect that the process of shifting course and campus would be so laborious and time-consuming.

Enrollment at UP Los Banos 2010

Supposedly, the actual date of enrollment for her was June 4. But upon the advise of Tita Flora to avoid the June 4 surge of enrollees, we enrolled Karen a day before. Well, there were still long queues.

Need for Fitness Training

I'm now able to walk but not for long distances. Except in the mornings when I wake up, I no longer do this contorted walk after getting out of bed. Before, I had to roll my right foot a bit to the side.
This way, I stepped on the outside of the foot to avoid stepping on the wounded area. I did that for a couple of weeks and it somehow affected my right hip which made it hurt a bit.

Fun Run as Physical Education Finals
Yesterday was Che's P.E. class finals and for that, they had a fun run. Che studies at UP Manila but their finals, a couple of laps run, was held at the UP Oval in Diliman.
That's because UP Manila doesn't have its own running oval. Also, since all the Physical Education classes finals were held simultaneously, they needed a much bigger running track.
The UP oval is an ideal place for the venue. In fact there were other runners and many just for fitness exercise.
From the outfits you could discern some were triathlon runners, marathon runners and sports runners. Mostly, though, they were the recreational fitness runners.
There were many runners there but not enough to crowd the running track. Some were triathletes on their time trainer bikes while some folks walked with their dogs. Click on the left image to see the UP Diliman Academic Oval via google maps.

72-Hour Survival Kit
My eldest daughter, Che, who is in first year college, announced she needed to prepare a 72-hour survival kit. This is for her subject Natural Science, or NatSci.
She needed to gather up all the items for the kit, make up a list of the items, take a photo of the kit and submit it to the professor. That's about much I know about the project.
The first thing she did was to search the web for survival items that constitute a 72-Hour Survival Kit. Why 72 hours? Well, supposedly, that means 3 days of waiting before a rescue happens.
The items that turned up on her search were the usual: bottled water, food, first aid kit, flash light, pocket knife, matches, candles, etc. I asked her what situation was the survival setting in? Floods? Hurricanes? Earthquake? Fire?

United Nations Day 2009
It's another United Nations Day celebration over at Renz's school and yup, he's sporting an Indonesian "attire" again. Nope, can't vouch for the authenticity, but it's the same outfit he wore last year!
This year's parade was held in the morning though and everyone seemed to have enjoyed it more compared to the blistering heat of the afternoon sun last year. Renz's partner last year, Ira or Eira is still his partner this year although she's now wearing Mexico. She wore China last year.

Ako'y Isang Pinoy
This year, Renz's class performed the song "Ako'y Isang Pinoy" by Florante for the school's Buwan ng Wika celebration held last August 29. You know the song: "Ako'y isang Pinoy, sa puso't diwa. Pinoy na isinilang sa ating bansa..."
I was so impressed with Renz's diligence to memorize the song by singing it aloud. He would sing it all day which drove his sisters batty. Of course every time he sang it, I'd correct his tune until he got it perfectly.
We were surprised one day when we learned the teacher asked him to sing it in front of the class for everybody to follow. Apparently, his singing became THAT good!
That's Renz on the stage, in the middle.

Speech Choir at Sandra's School
In celebration of Linggo ng Wika (occurs at August), Sandra's school, Southernside Montessori School had a Speech Choir competition which they called Sabayang Pagbigkas. They held this last August 27.
Sandra's class, Talisay, delivered a piece entitled "Ang Sabi ng Idol Ko". They've been practicing this piece for days and Sandra would sometimes come home late. That's Sandra in the middle, with the glasses.

First Day of School 2009
Yesterday was the first day for Sandra in her new school. Karen started school since last week. Che and Renz are still on vacation mode.
Come to think of it, this year is a milestone. It will be the first year the kids will be attending different schools.

United Nations Parade 2008
Today, being United Nation’s Day, the IJMC school celebrated the usual United Nations Day.
Customarily, the students wear an attire of the country they're representing (or something close to it!). They then parade down the streets outside of the school.
Here’s Renz wearing a made-up Indonesian garb as he represented Indonesia. He's sitting on a deadwood at the back of the renthouse.

First Day of School at MunSci

Since Munsci is just nearer than Laco, Karen, like ate won't need to wake up as early as before. Now, Tita Gay no longer needs to fetch since Karen and Che will be together coming home. It's really great that Karen managed the entrance exams. On the first day, both DH and I were there. There was quite a lengthy orientation at the quadrangle at around 8am, we decided to leave. I drove DH to her new office at P3 Sta. Rosa using the Timbao route. Over at P3, I met Mon Rico on the way out. Gosh, he's been there for 5 years now.
I'll most probly be taking them to school this entire week or at least until I can go swimming again. This wound on my elbow is taking too long to heal.
