Saving on Airconditioning Energy Costs this Summer

According to PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration), "Temperature in Metro Manila hit 37.5 degrees Celsius yesterday, the warmest day recorded in the metropolis since January. The sizzling temperature was recorded at 4 p.m. yesterday at the agency’s facility in Quezon City."

No wonder even my bed on the second floor of our house felt warm to the touch as I laid on it. The afternoon strong breeze that has kept our house cool has been noticeably absent for a week.

The past few nights have also been quite warm. The mosquito net solution to ward off the pesky mosquito somehow dissipates the breeze coming from the wall mounted electric fan.

Relayouting the TV and Computer in the Family Room

After plenty of observation and thinking, I finally relayouted the computer table and TV in the family hall. Presently, there are only a couple of major activities happening in the family hall: TV viewing and computer usage.

Computer usage for the kids mean mostly homework and research during school and computer games and social media during vacation.

For me, personally, I still consider this little nook in the family hall as the home office even with this crappy little computer table. Yes, we still share. Afterall, when the kids are in school during the day, I can use the computer for my work.

Originally, the backs of the computer table and the TV were against the wall. So that means the computer user and TV viewers were facing the window. Here is the old layout with the kids milling around the computer table.

Cooling by Natural Air Circulation and Ventilation

It's just the first week of March but it's already a sweltering 34 degrees Celsius outside. And a weather temperature of 36 to 37 degrees is quite possible in the coming weeks.

Some friends in the neighborhood have been complaining of the heat. It's so bad that they couldn't stay inside their house for long during the day. It's become too hot and stuffy.

But I'm not complaining too much and I'm actually cool with it, literally and figuratively. In fact, I hardly break a sweat unless I do something strenuous like exercise or heavy housework.

And I attribute that to the breeze for natural cooling we get around the house.

It certainly helps that we don't have window and door screens installed. We had them in our old house and I'm convinced that window screens significantly cut down the amount of natural air cooling.

Energy Savings from Natural Air Ventilation

We rely on natural air circulation and ventilation to cool the house. We hardly turn on the electric fan and don't need to turn on the air conditioner.

I've no exact numbers, but I suppose we save a lot in terms of electricity since we don't have a need for these electric appliances to cool us.
