Visit to the Dentist and The Speaker's Handbook

Today being a holiday, EDSA Revolution Day (or something), DH scheduled the 4 for the dental cleaning at Dentista Inc. at Alabang Town Center using their HMO cards. Che, Karen and Sandra were all cool with the cleaning coz it wasn't their first time although the ATC branch was a first. While waiting (only the 3 were accommodated), Renz was simply joking around and dancing at his ates. He had a grand time making fun of the older sisters.

THEN it was his turn. I think he got all tensed up and nervous coz he began crying and felt throwing up all the time. After his ordeal, DH teased him with her words: "Sinasayawan mo pa sina ate kanina, nung ikaw na, nagkanda-sukasuka ka naman." :)

For lunch, we only had siomai and siopao. I also got a new book: The Speaker's Handbook by Jo Sprague and Douglas Stuart.

It thought it was a steal as it was down 50% off! Well okay, it WAS a steal for a toastmaster, that is. I got it for Php317.50. Although the pages weren't thick and white, the book is loaded with content. Later, I found out that a companion CD came with it. The CD contains videos of the sample speeches referenced by the book.

I had to go to Festival National Book Store coz the Alabang Town Center branch didn't have it. Fortunately, I had the foresight of calling ATC branch first to verify. The apologetic lady referred me to Festival Mall branch the following day coz they didn't have stocks. At least I didn't have to waste time returning to ATC on the same day to claim a CD that wasn't stocked.

Gardening and Watering Plants

With a 3-day weekend, we visited Pampanga. It was breezy but Renz still managed to water SOME plants in the afternoon. Here's the "hardinero" for the day under the supervision of Tita Divine.

Corz, DH was loitering the garden the whole time. Me? I suppose I was so tired that I slept from 12noon to 2pm. And felt lethargic until 4pm! :(

The Magical Refrigerator

Ahhhhhh.... Time for a facelift. THIS blog's facelift, that is. Do you like the new layout and graphics? Thanx Lene, for the tip!

Occasionally (well, except for Karen who does it almost everyday), the kids would leave notes on the refrigerator on things they'd like to remind or some requests. Here's Karen's notes.

She'd have notes stuck to the door, the whiteboard, and even on the rice cooker. Rice cooker? Yeah, coz that's what DH will do first thing in the morning - cook rice. Karen's notes are mostly on asking DH to wake her up early. This is purportedly to finish some schoolwork or fix up her school materials. Che's and Sandra's notes mostly deal with school projects like request to prepare a potted plant, buy some kitchen ingredients for Home Economic subjects, sign some school forms, leave some money for a project or what not.

Well apparently, little 6 yo. Renz found that these requests are ALWAYS attended to. It seemed that anything you wish for and put on the ref, it gets granted! Ahhh, it's just like a modern-day version of Alladin's lamp in the book. Well, not to be outdone and probly trying out his luck, this is what we saw this morning.

Corrected, it read as follows:
"Mama, bumili ka po ng Spiderwick (animation book). Kahit ano po, basta maganda."
And while he was at it, he added the following:
"Mama, bilhan mo po ako ng Vegi-Vegi Good na gummy (gummy candy)."

Uhmmm, I suppose he's expecting the magical ref to grant his wishes anytime soon.

Could it be Piriformis Syndrome? Sciatica?

The doctor that looked me up last week didn't come in today. I was complaining of some dull pain near my right butt at the hip area. And last week he suggested a pain-reliever, Mobic 15 gms, for 5 days - and hot compress. Well, it's been over a week and the dull pain still goes on and off. I can even feel a slight muscle pull on my hip with my fingers as I walk. I've searched over the internet and the closest that describes the pain is Piriformis Syndrome. The pain could extend towards the lower leg when the Sciatic nerve is irritated - or Sciatica - which could be worse because the pain can be excruciating. It is much like the pain that I felt when I worked under a unit's sink in the apartment. My whole body was all scrunched up under the sink and I knew my vertabrae was not in the best position when I felt this searing pain that ran through my right leg. Ugh.
Anyway the pic below shows where the piriformis muscle is and where the pain is.

There are many exercises that can be done to stretch the piriformis with different positions, supine, prone, etc. But by far the simplest stretch I've seen that can be done anywhere is in a sitting position as shown below:

The nice thing about this exercise is you could even position the warm compress (hot water bottle for me) and sit on it. Isn't that convenient?

If There's a Will ...

... There's a way. And that's what describes this plant I saw at home. Among the potted pink and red Euphorbias at home, a plant grew out of a pot's drain hole. When it was small, I thought it was a weed of some sort. Until one day it sprouted a nice yellow flower and really coming out on its own.

Grilling Fish

I think I'm getting into this grilling thing. Today I put tilapia (stuffed with onions and wrapped in foil) and hotdogs on the grill. Even with a strong fire, the tilapias don't get burned much coz of the foil. They tasted really good. And its really fun grilling stuff under the mango tree with the cool breeze chatting away with DH.

I even learned that you don't even need charcoals to grill. What I do is after cooking the rice, the left over burning wood can have the same effect as burning charcoal. You want burning embers, but you don't want robust flames on your grill. So here's a list of things you can do to douse the strong flames.

1. With a single forceful whiff of the fan, you might be able to put out the flame.
2. Turn over the burning wood. By turning over, some of the flames die out.
3. Sprinkle some water on the flames. A sprayer would really do the trick.
4. Take out the burning wood until its flame smothers. Then return it to the grill.

I'm now thinking of nice marinades and sauces for fish like tilapia and hito. Hmmm.

Shy Birds

Today we went over at Tony Lim's. Dada and Renz went with us. That's our first stop on the way to Sony Service Center at Alabang to have the Digicam fixed (again!) for free coz it's still under warranty. Tony gave us a pair of Lovebirds (Parakeets). The blue is a female and the yellow with pink eye is a male. He shared with us his passion for his hobby with so many stories. We put the birds inside a big cage (big enough to house a monkey!). And I even fashioned a carton box for a bird house. But somehow the two just didn't seem to click with one another (hindi nagiimikan). What's up with that?

Che's J-S Prom as a Junior

After some last minute preparations (hunting for a gown to use), it's finally Che's prom night. I quickly sneaked out of the office around 4:30pm. JP was having the birthday bash at MOA (more rounds of "buling-lingan" or bowling) and I've already excused myself from that.

We reached Bellevue Hotel at around 5:40pm. Gemma and her mom went with us. We skipped the "retouch" appointment with the parlor coz the girls looked fine already. As I did in the service awards night, we parked at the basement and then proceeded to the lobby.

Body Pains all Over

pc1/86/110-90
It's been 3 days since our swimming last Sunday but I still feel like my bod has been hit by a truck! There's so much soreness EVERYWEHRE. Must be the my poor old aging body unable to recover as quickly as before. Well, in fairness, I've been out of the pool for almost 3 weeks already. And last Sunday was so enjoyable that I gave demoes of my graceful Butterfly stroke here and there, every now and then. It was DH and the kids' first time to see it. So I suppose the body just had so much. Too much that I had to go to the clinic to complain my soreness and the feverish feeling (flu-like symptoms) I've been having especially at night. Well, the doc didn't see anything wrong 'cept for the elevated cholesterol in my records to which she prescribed Lipanthyl 160mg for 30 days.

First Experience at Blumen Resort

Although it rained very hard this morning, nothing was gonna stop us from going to Blumen resort at Paliparan crossing and GMA Cavite. I first heard about this resort from Prince when he was scouting for an alternative to our pool that closed down. For a moment, I thought we'vd have overcast skies all day. But when DH came (she went to work early) at 10:30am, the sun was out. I even had to recreate my map using the trusty Wikimapia.

Blumen Resort isn't hard to find. It's much farther than the Filinvest pool but it's convenient and driving's easy especially on a Sunday. Entrance is at Php80 for adults and Php70 for kids. Cottage was at Php100. "Cottage" means a simple bench and table setup of corz. There are rooms ranging from Php1,500 to Php2,500. That is still very very cheap. No wonder there were so many people later in the afternoon. Our cottage was quickly taken the moment we left.

There was already karaoke-singing when we got there and so there were quite a few there already. And we were right. I didn't see much of the rules/ guidelines posted at the gate but judging from the crowd's attire there, you could say it was swimsuit-optional. Except for the men who were topless, you'd think everybody just dunked into the pool with whatever it was they were wearing on the way there. Yup, it was a "let's-go-pay-entrance-and-dunk-into-the-pool" crowd. No need to change into a swimsuit or trunks. Why do I say that? Look at the pic below. Are those pajamas, or what?

Yup, they look like pajamas. She must've gone in the pool right out from bed. The kids, on the other hand are easy to spot. They're the ones in swimsuits and swimcaps. But for the others, a woman's attire de rigueur is a bright colored t-shirt (or blouse!), presumably so you won't recognize the bra underneath. But when you're wet in the water, your garments won't lie. You'll see the bra's outline, straps, even the rusty clasps. And then there's the bright colored shorts. Corz, you'll also see their panties underneath. Swimcaps? Ugh, they never heard of 'em. Forgive my long rant here but these are the same people who'd later complain how dirty the pool is - clumps of long hair floating, cloth fibers, buttons, hair pins or clips, etc.

So you can imagine the stares we got when the kids lathered themselves with sunscreen while donning swimsuits. Even if they wore shorts, it's always swimsuit material. Luckily I brought an extra old pair of trunks that DH was able to wear over her swimsuit. I also gave away some of my never-been-used trunks to Che and Da coz they were just too small for me.

Here's the gang having lunch. Lunch is a pork dish, some bread, pancit and lumpiang togue.

DH and I also spent a few minutes at the lap pool. It's 4 feet deep on both ends and 6 feet deep (yay!) at the middle. There's a sign that sez it's where the Blumen Orca swim team trains. Umm, okay. Because of its depth, not many folks hang around in that pool.

Here's Sandra and Renz at the parasol of the kiddie pool.

There was an adult slide shown here in the background. And all four had their turns going up and down the slide.

Here are the 3 at the 4 ft deep pool. Yup, you could definitely say this is a swimsuit-optional resort. Another swimsuit-optional resort is nearby Medz Resort which is just across the main road.

It was the gang's first time to see me do the butterfly. Che even became curious and wanted to learn more. I suppose my demo turned out to be nice and graceful coz even DH did the dolphin kicks to at least try it out. The kids, especially Renz enjoyed the resort very much. We'll be back for sure

Got a New "Work-Related" Book

It's been quite a long long time eversince I bought a "work-related" book. Most books that I've bought pertained to swimming or some other hobby I have. Coz why buy when so many articles are out there at the 'net, right? But today I bought a book I've seen sometime ago at Booksale. The title of the book is "Results Without Authority" and written by Tom Kendrick. It's got the subtitle "Controlling a Project when the Team doesn't Report to You" - and that particularlhy piqued my interest. Seems like good reading and I've started reading it at the service bus. It's got lots of practical suggestions on project management.

My extended workout (1.5 hrs) after a long absence took its tool as I felt some pain on my left instep.
