Protection Against Dog Attacks when Walking Your Dog

Dog walking is a fantastic way to exercise, both for you and your dog. But it's not without its own challenges. One thing that takes pleasure away from peaceful enjoyable walks are aggressive off-leash dogs in the neighborhood.

Many of these off-leash dogs aren't even stray dogs. No, they're mostly owned by irresponsible dog owners who just let them roam outside unattended so that their dogs could poop anywhere outside their homes and/or "get some exercise".

Although I've been applying the my Best Anti-Tick Solution for Dogs in powder form for quite sometime, I've been toying the idea of applying Sevin powder to my dog while bathing her. That means being able to bathe the dog while at the same time applying an anti-tick treatment.

I hesitated with the idea though because I was thinking that slowly pouring the Sevin mixed with water on the dog would be wasteful. Imagine the Sevin mixture just dripping off from the dog's fur and then going down the drain, not to mention that which the dog shakes off after getting wet.

Ever since I posted my tip on the Best Anti-Tick Solution for Dogs, I have to admit, I've been remiss in actually practicing this method. This year, when summer was about to end, I discovered a heavy infestation of ticks AND fleas on my pooch's coat. Even her eyelids were not spared from dog ticks. The fleas were almost everywhere but more especially in the dog's snout and face. In this area, the fleas are deep and difficult to find.

When you have a garden lawn, one of the disadvantages of having a pet dog is the risk of having ticks and fleas getting on the dog. This is especially if the dog isn't tied or caged and is allowed to roam the yard.

I'm an avid gardener and we have front and back yards with gardens and lawns planted to grass. Our dog isn't tied or caged. She's very much active and loves to rest, lie and romp around the garden. I think ticks will always be a problem if the dog is in constant contact with ground soil.

At least that's what the picture below looks like. This was taken when I had my one-week vacation which stretched to two weeks because of foot accident.

That's Danny the Puppy being inspected for some insects that have been crawling on his skin. They're not ticks which simply latch on to the skin. I don't know what they are but they are fast crawlers (faster than ants) and don't jump.

Dog Look-alike

Today I resumed my morning walks. With the wound of my foot injury healing nicely, I'm guessing it would be wise to be walking for exercise again. Thankfully, the foot obliged and I was able to walk for a longer distance. I'm still limited to a leisurely pace though. Long strides, where the foot takes on more weight at an instant, can still hurt.

It's been a month since my last walk in our subdivision and there have been some changes - new constructions and renovations. The weather too seem to have changed a bit. The sun's up earlier now and it's a bit warmer.

Last month's a bit chillier when we went walking. In one of our morning walks then, we chanced upon this dog sleeping soundly on the hood of a jeepney in the neighborhood.

Cruelty to Animals on New Year's Eve

Slumped on the dirty kitchen floor, our dog Poochie looks dead tired.

She's been listless in the past couple of days especially today. I'd attribute that to the incessant barking she does whenever she hears firecrackers. The occasional firecracker explosion day and night keeps her awake.

She doesn't usually sleep this way. She'd always lie on her side which is a more comfortable position for her to sleep soundly. Here though, it's like she just dropped on the floor and closed her eyes.

Enough already!

That's what Poochie, our dog, seems to be saying with Renz's taunting.

Poor dog.

Here, she pulls down one of her ears. Although from the picture, it appears she's covering her eyes.

Either that or in reality she simply wants to play and does her "papansin" moves to catch Renz's attention.

Sinusuwerte (Getting Lucky)

Around this month of last year, we got Poochie as a puppy. Since we were just renting back then, we didn't have much space and she had to settle outside at the garage.

And the garage wasn't even fully covered. That meant she got wet and cold when the typhoon rains came.

But she survived.

Now, a year later, the dog's becoming too spoiled. With the new house, she's got a bigger place to roam. The garage's roof extends to the dirty kitchen and so that's plenty of space for her to sleep without getting wet.

Last Anti-Rabies Shot for Renz

After 4 sessions and 11 injections, Renz finally "graduated" from his shots at the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine or RITM in Alabang last Wednesday. Renz was bitten (scratched, is more like it) by Poochie a few weeks ago prior to Poochie's anti-rabies injection.

How did it happen? Well, Poochie was eating by the door (not her usual place) when Renz stepped outside. Renz's putting on his slippers somehow startled Poochie and grazed Renz's foot with her mouth.


Other than Renz, it was only Che who had a case of dog bite and required injections at RITM. This was when she was around 2 or 3 and we went biking together. I didn't think our dog Poochie had rabies at all as she's always inside our yard. But of course, we just didn't want to take any chances. And fortunately, Renz was mostly cool with the injections.

Could be a Dane

A former co-worker, Anthony, emailed yesterday that the dog I pointed out in the previous entry could be a Great Dane and attached a photo:

Hi, I think the dog might be a Great Dane. The dog "Scooby Doo" in the cartoon is actually a Great Dane. Is this how the dog looks like? Some of these dogs' ears can be altered so they appear to stand straight:

I think he's right. Although the dog isn't as young as the dog in the photo above, its long hind legs sure reminded me of Scooby's.

Anti-Rabies Vaccination Day for Dogs

Today was the vaccination day for the neighborhood dogs. We've been anticipating this coz it's Poochie's first time to be vaccinated at 8 months. I believe this is a yearly project spearheaded by Dr. Pam Hernandez, our architect's veterinarian-daughter who works at Muntinlupa City Hall. For just Php50, a dog gets vaccinated and is good for a year.

Quite a lot turned up for today. Luckily we were listed at number 15. That's Toto in the blue shirt under the tent administering the injections. There were dogs of all breeds and sizes. Most had leashes and some were carried. Some owners came with small dogs in pet cages. I even mistook a small dog for a cat.

Guard Dog on Duty

Here’s Poochie our “guard dog” on duty – snoring the afternoon away. This after a ssssion of tick removal and a bath. Don't be misled though. When awake, she catches rats and mice. But for places she can't reach, we have rat poisoned baits in a dish.

Poochie staring out the front gate. It’s funny that with the move into our new house, Poochie has grown big enough that she could only stick her head out in between the bars of the front gate. Had we moved into the new house at an earlier date, Pooch would still be small and would easily wiggle herself out.

Poochie’s Growing Fast

Maybe it’s the vitamins she’s getting everyday, but the puppy’s getting bigger. Here, she’s munching on a piece of stick, to Renz’s amusement.

Goodbye Snoopy

This morning, our old dog, Snoopy died. She’s 12+ years old and had a lingering illness for quite a while.

After a couple of days of a healthy appetite, we thought that she’d rebound but we were wrong. She’s the dog that stayed with us for the longest time and has been so valuable to us as a faithful guard dog as mentioned in this entry.
